Maya is a popular 3D modeling and animation package produced by Autodesk. Level geometry, models (weapons, props), and character models can all be created and textured in Maya and exported into a format usable by the X-Ray engine by means of plugins supplied with the X-Ray SDK. Maya was used by GSC Game World to create content for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl.

Note that the Maya PLE (Personal Learning Edition) does not support plugins and cannot be used to export models and level geometry. It is a good choice for people who would like to learn how to model, or who would like to learn about Maya's unique interface and features, before purchasing a complete package. Follow this link to download the Maya PLE. For a complete description of Maya PLE's limitations, see the Maya Personal Learning Edition question and answer page at Autodesk.
